According the the 2004 Census, Phoenix's population was estimated at 1,416,055. In 1993, Phoenix ,also known as the "Valley of the Sun", was selected as the "Best Run City in the World".

Phoenix is 1058 feet above sea level and lies in the heart of the Sonoran Desert. Running westward through the city of Phoenix is the Salt River. Phoenix is surrounded by four sets of mountains: the McDowell Mountains to the northeast, the White Tank Mountains to the east the Sierra Estrella to the southwest and to the far east are the Superstition Mountains.
